Each second it releases more energy than all human civilizations could ever produce in their lifetimes. Across the world, separated by oceans and millennia, cultures turned their eyes to the sky and recognized the same truth: the Sun is alive. The Sun is god, guide, and giver of life. They built their myths, rituals, and empires upon this knowing.
1. Egypt — Ra and Aten
For the Egyptians, the Sun was not distant — it was the very heartbeat of creation.
- Ra, the solar father, sailed across the heavens by day in his golden barque, and through the underworld by night, defeating chaos-serpents so dawn could return.
- During the reign of Akhenaten, the Sun disk itself, Aten, was worshipped as the sole visible god, rays ending in hands reaching down to bless humanity.
Temples, obelisks, and pyramids were all solar instruments — aligned with solstices, equinoxes, and the eternal rising of Ra.
2. Inca — Inti the Radiant Father
In the high Andes, the Inca revered Inti, the Sun, as their divine father. The Sapa Inca, their ruler, was considered his direct descendant — the “Son of the Sun.”
- Golden temples in Cusco shimmered with solar imagery.
- The great festival of Inti Raymi celebrated the winter solstice with offerings of light, music, and fire.
- Crops, seasons, and daily life were all woven to Inti’s rhythm.

- The Gayatri Mantra, one of the holiest verses, is a direct invocation of the Sun’s intelligence: “May we attain the radiance of Surya that awakens our minds.”

In many Aboriginal Australian traditions, the Sun is feminine — a Sun-woman who lights her torch each morning and carries it across the sky.
- She is a nurturer, mother, and life-giver.

This feminine face of the Sun reminds us that solar energy is not only masculine force but also maternal warmth and continuity.

- Greece: Helios, who drives his chariot daily; Apollo, god of light and truth.
- Norse: Sol, the goddess pursued by the wolf Sköll until the end of the age.
